Dental Implants Q & A

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants act as an artificial tooth root with a crown to replace missing teeth. A dental implant consists of a crown and titanium post that holds it in place. Because they fit, feel and function like natural teeth, dental implants have become the new standard of care for replacing missing teeth. Dr. Eivens and Dr. Laubach customize dental implants to match the patient’s other teeth so they blend in well, look natural and last a lifetime.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer several benefits over other types of restorations. The titanium posts that hold them in place are placed into the jaw bone, meaning that they are much more secure when compared to other types of restorations. Unlike dentures, dental implants prevent bone loss and last a lifetime.

How are dental implants placed?

Dr. Eivens and Dr. Laubach work with an Oral Surgeon to have a titanium implant placed in the patient’s bone. The titanium post takes the place of the tooth root. Sometimes a bone graft is also recommended. Over a few months, the bone integrates with the post. Once the bone is integrated, Dr. Eivens or Dr. Laubach attach a customized crown to the titanium post which has replaced the tooth root. This creates a beautiful restoration. It will look and feel just like a natural tooth.

Do implants require special care?

Dental implant care is similar to that of natural teeth. Patients continue to brush their teeth, floss normally and visit the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Although the implant cannot get cavities, the gums around the implant can still deteriorate. If the patient develops periodontal disease in the area, the metal post can loosen. Dr. Eivens and Dr. Laubach recommend visits at least twice a year to keep your implant healthy.
