Teeth Whitening Q & A

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A.

When is teeth whitening appropriate?

Teeth discoloration occurs for many different reasons. Common causes include consuming certain beverages on a regular basis such as red wine, tea, coffee, using tobacco and consuming foods with certain colorings. If the patient doesn’t practice good oral hygiene, discoloration may become worse. In addition, patients who take certain medications or have specific diseases may develop a different type of tooth discoloration.

Teeth whitening proves helpful for most superficial stains caused by food, drink and tobacco use. However, when tooth discoloration occurs because of diseases or medication, teeth whitening may not be effective. In these cases the patient may need restorative services such as veneers.

What types of teeth whitening are available?

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A. offers both in-office whitening treatments such as Zoom WhiteSpeed whitening and take-home whitening kits. In-office whitening treatments take only an hour or so to complete while take-home whitening kits get results in just days or up to two weeks.

How does in-office whitening work?

During an in-office whitening procedure, our dental professional uses a special device to hold the lips away from the teeth before applying a whitening agent. This whitening agent remains on the teeth throughout the treatment. The patient comfortably sits under a Zoom WhiteSpeed Light to activate the substance. The dental professional will reapply the whitening agent several times throughout the session.

How does take-home whitening work?

If a patient opts for a take-home whitening kit, Dr. Laubach or Dr. Eivens provides a custom fit tray that holds the whitening agent against the teeth during the treatment process. Using this kit, the patient whitens their teeth at home over a period of time. Patients customize their whitening level by how frequently they utilize the kit.

Is professional teeth whitening better than over-the-counter bleaching kits?

Yes. Over-the-counter whitening kits come with a one-size-fits all tray that isn’t customized to fit the patient’s teeth. Because the tray isn’t custom fit, the whitening agent may leak out during treatments. In addition, unlike a professional whitening tray, the trays with over-the-counter kits are often not reusable. Further, over-the-counter kits typically don’t provide the same level of results as a professional whitening treatment.
