Crowns and Bridges Q & A

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A.

What is a crown?

A crown is a covering that looks like a natural tooth. Dr. Eivens and Dr. Laubach use a crown when a patient’s tooth structure is no longer strong enough to withstand chewing and possibly may break. This occurs when a patient has a large cavity, a large filling, a root canal or a fracture in the tooth.

Dr. Eivens and Dr. Laubach also use a crown to support a dental bridge or to hide a tooth with severe cosmetic defects. The crown covers the entire tooth, providing added durability and support.

How is a crown attached?

Once the crown is ready, Dr. Eivens or Dr. Laubach use a special adhesive material to attach the crown to the tooth. The crown will become permanently bonded to your tooth to last for many years.

What is a bridge?

A bridge, a dental device that replaces lost teeth, attaches to teeth on either side of the gap in the patient’s mouth. The middle of the bridge is composed of artificial teeth that match the shape and color of the patient’s remaining natural teeth.

How is a bridge attached?

Bridges are attached using crowns on either side of the gap in the patient’s mouth. Dr. Eivens or Dr. Laubach attaches the bridge using a high quality bonded cement so that the bridge will last for many years.

How secure are crowns and bridges?

This can depend on the habits of the patient. If the patient cares for their crowns and bridges, they last for many years.
