Teeth Cleaning Q & A

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A.

Why is routine teeth cleaning necessary?

Most patients already take care of their teeth at home with regular brushing and flossing. However, brushing and flossing alone will not eliminate all plaque, tartar and bacteria from the teeth, gums and mouth. Regular professional teeth cleanings remove harmful pathogens and buildup, ensuring the health of the teeth. Regular cleanings also help prevent periodontal disease which is the leading cause of bone loss. Dr. Laubach and Dr. Eivens use regular teeth cleanings as an opportunity to identify any issues with the teeth or gums before they become serious. Issues discovered during a teeth cleaning and checkup include infection, gum disease, cavities, oral cancer and tooth fractures.

What should patients expect during teeth cleaning?

During a teeth cleaning, the dental hygienist examines the teeth and gums for signs of an obvious problem. They use special tools to remove tartar, plaque and bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth, the spaces between the teeth and the area beneath the gum line. The dental hygienist then polishes the teeth to remove surface stains and may also apply a fluoride treatment. At the end of the appointment, the hygienist recommends brushing and flossing strategies so the patient can improve at-home care.

If a dental checkup is simultaneously scheduled, Dr. Laubach or Dr. Eivens examine the teeth and gums for problems. The doctor also performs an oral cancer screening.

Are teeth cleanings painful?

Teeth cleanings aren’t usually uncomfortable. However, if the patient hasn’t had a cleaning recently or has sensitive teeth, they may experience some discomfort. In such cases, Dr. Laubach or Dr. Eivens offers a strong numbing gel to numb the gums and teeth before the cleaning.

Our practice is currently welcoming new patients and accepts most major forms of insurance.
