Oral Hygiene Q & A

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A.

What happens during a checkup?

During a dental checkup, Dr. Laubach or Dr. Eivens evaluates the patient’s dental health using visual inspection and/or x-rays. If one of the doctors finds a problem, she recommends the appropriate treatment to the patient. The patient also receives oral hygiene tips during a checkup visit.

What happens during a cleaning?

During a cleaning, a dental hygienist spends time carefully cleaning each tooth, removing tartar, checking the health of the gums and making notes of any problems. The dental hygienist also offers oral hygiene tips to the patient throughout the cleaning. In many cases, patients undergo a checkup and a cleaning during the same appointment. Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A. recommends a cleaning and checkup at least once every 6 months.

How do fluoride treatments work?

During a fluoride treatment, the doctors or hygienists expose the patient’s teeth to fluoride, a mineral that helps to strengthen tooth enamel. Stronger tooth enamel protects the teeth from bacteria that cause decay and infection. Fluoride treatments are quick and painless. Both children and adults benefit from this preventive service.

How can patients practice good oral hygiene at home?

Patients should brush their teeth carefully at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging tooth enamel. Patients should also floss daily to remove debris from the teeth and to promote healthy gums. Additionally, it is recommended you replace your toothbrush every 3 months.

Dietary factors also affect the health of the teeth. Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A. cautions patients against eating or drinking sugary or acidic substances regularly as they may damage the teeth. If patients choose to consume these items they should rinse their mouths thoroughly after eating or drinking.
