Routine Maintenance Q & A

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A.

What does routine maintenance include?

Routine maintenance includes a variety of diagnostic procedures and treatments designed to maintain the health of the teeth, gums and mouth. These procedures include checkups, dental cleanings, examinations, oral cancer screenings and diagnostic x-rays.

Why is routine maintenance necessary?

Even with good at-home oral hygiene patients still develop problems such as cavities, tooth infections, oral cancer and periodontal disease. Routine maintenance helps prevent these problems from occurring and identifies any issues as soon as they appear, leading to quick treatment.

How often should a patient visit the dentist for routine maintenance?

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A. recommends checkups and cleanings at least once every 6 months. For patients with existing problems or for those who haven’t been to the dentist in a while, more frequent visits may be necessary. In many cases, patients schedule checkups and cleanings at the same time.

What happens during a dental checkup?

During a dental checkup, Dr. Eivens or Dr. Laubach evaluates the patient’s teeth and gums for signs of disease, oral cancer or other problems such as cavities or infection. In many cases, a dental checkup also includes routine x-rays designed to look for other problems with the teeth or bones. For children, x-rays allow Dr. Eivens or Dr. Laubach to see that the teeth are developing properly.

What happens during a cleaning?

During a professional cleaning, a dental hygienist cleans each of the teeth thoroughly, removing any tartar or plaque buildup present. At the end of the cleaning, the dental hygienist will polish your teeth and then may administer a fluoride treatment. The dental hygienist also looks for problems with the teeth and reports them to Dr. Eivens or Dr. Laubach.

What else can patients do to improve oral health?

In addition to routine maintenance, Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A. also recommends that patients practice good oral hygiene at home. Patients should brush their teeth with a soft brush at least twice each day, floss daily to protect gum health, and make an appointment with Dr. Eivens or Dr. Laubach as soon as possible if they notice a problem with their teeth.
