Urgent Care Q & A

Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A.

When should a patient call urgent care?

Patients consider urgent care for a variety of situations that qualify as a dental emergency. This includes loose teeth, teeth that were knocked out, damaged dental implants, broken crowns or bridges, damaged veneers, damaged dentures, chipped or broken teeth, abscesses, severe toothaches, severe pain in the jaw, lacerations, rough spots or discoloration in the mouth that lasts for more than two weeks.

When a patient experiences one of these emergencies, they should immediately call the office for an appointment. Getting prompt care prevents the situation from becoming more serious.

What steps should patients take when losing a tooth?

If a patient accidentally loses a tooth, they should call Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A. immediately to make an emergency appointment. First, rinse off any dirt from the tooth and try to place it back in the socket. Biting on a cloth can help hold the tooth in place while on the way to the office. If the patient cannot put the tooth back in, they should put it in a glass of milk or hold it in the mouth between the cheek and the gums.

When a tooth is knocked out, avoid touching the root at all costs. Any contact with the root could damage or contaminate it with bacteria.

How can patients avoid dental emergencies?

Patients help prevent dental emergencies by engaging in routine maintenance such as regular checkups and cleanings. Good at home care also helps. In addition, avoid using teeth as tools, chewing on ice or otherwise putting too much stress on the teeth. When participating in sports, wear mouth guards to prevent damage to the teeth and gums. When you’re in need of urgent dental care, call Advanced Smiles Dental, P.A. and we will get you in right away. Our practice is currently welcoming new patients and accepts most major forms of insurance.
